I was having a semi-serious conversation with one of my friends on how we envision ourselves in the future. My friend recently changed his major, which got us to this topic. As I mentioned before, one of the most important epiphanies I have had while participating in this apprenticeship was how important technology and efficiently using social media is for smaller businesses to grow and brand themselves. This makes me want to minor in computer science. This way even if I have a mostly liberal education, I can still have somewhat of a technical background and a more practical skill set. I feel like these two types of education complement each other.
With my theoretical background, I can utilize my technical skills to execute the out of the box or creative methods to fix problems. Also if I do end up working at a smaller company and have an important role, I have to be involved or in the know of everything that is going on to effectively use my time and not waste other people’s time. By at least having a little bit of knowledge of computer science and knowing technical terminology, I will not be so dependent on other people and it will be easier for me to know and understand how the marketing and tech side of the company functions and contribute to the company. Also, it will be easier for me to pick things up and to realize when it is time to maybe change to a different software or program to make the company flow more smoothly to grow faster and make a bigger and better difference in whatever cause it supports.
