“Never miss an opportunity to compliment someone.†That was my lesson of the week that I learned from Mona.
Obviously as my supervisor, she was addressing this concept from a business perspective. However, I realized that this shouldn’t be just from a business perspective but a norm that I should live by. By making this a norm that I live by, it will come naturally when I’m dealing with business matters.
So I did a little “experimenting.†I started off small and took my gratitude further and attached a simple compliment to those working for me in my extracurricular activities. I don’t know how seriously they took my compliment, but it sure put a smile on their face for at least a few seconds. Then I took it into more personal matters and threw our simple compliments to those around me. A simple, “That looks nice†or “You’ve really worked hard today. Good job.†Again, I put a smile on their face for a few seconds. As we all know, smiles are contagious. As they smiled, I grinned along with them.
It made me wonder, am I complimenting someone for my own personal benefit to smile? Whatever the ulterior motive, I created a drop of happiness. My weekly lesson, learned, implemented, and acquired. Mission accomplished.
